Anna Wiener
Anna Wiener is a young, self-assured, Brooklyn native who has landed high-paying jobs with high-tech companies, such as Github and Mixpanel. She also participates in scavenger hunts in San Francisco and befriends the youngest billionaire in the world. Wiener writes in her own words and her observations are often repetitive, but her story is still a relatable one of a young woman trying to drink the Silicon Valley Kool-Aid.
Wiener is a keen observer and scene-setter, with a keen eye for identifying details about people and their lives. She is particularly sensitive to the hypocrisy of young men. She captures the vertigo of online life elegantly, and she is a witty writer who can boil down an entire culture into a quotable line. Despite her cool distance, Wiener’s book is one that will keep you reading.
Wiener’s debut memoir, Uncanny Valley, will be released in January 2020 by MCD. It is based on her own experiences while she was still in her early 20s. When the tech startup boom was at its height, Wiener decided to move to San Francisco. After a brief stint in an office as a publishing assistant, she landed a job at a data-startup. Uncanny Valley is a fascinating look at the startup ecosystem, its culture, and its effects on people’s lives.
Wiener has an impressive resume. In addition to her debut memoir, “Uncanny Valley”, she is also a tech correspondent for The New Yorker. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she moved to San Francisco at age 25. She initially tried to break into publishing but was ultimately drawn to the work environment of Silicon Valley.
