The first book in the series was Elysian Fields, which was set in the French Quarter shortly before Hurricane Katrina. Its characters have names like “Hall of Heroes” and “Elysian Fields,” which have earned it acclaim as literary works from Tennessee Williams, Walker Percy, Robert Penn Warren, and Rabelis. Its descriptions of a Crescent City filled with water pleasure houses and subterraneous taverns and other symbols of the New World are reminiscent of Flannery O’s surrealism.
