The Traveller is the latest collection of poems by Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, a poet, playwright, and environmental educator. It focuses on the reaction of individuals to Juneteenth and freedom, both historically and locally. The author does a great job of weaving historical context into her poems.
Book review of Binti: The Complete Trilogy by Graham Swift
Binti, the first novella in the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor, is a sweeping sci-fi epic about a young Himba woman who is the first of her race to be accepted to the best university in the galaxy. After fleeing her homeworld and embarking on a life-changing journey, she finds herself confronting her own race’s past and making some difficult decisions about the future of his kind.
Book review of Endurance by Ernest Shackleton
Endurance is a non-fiction book about the first trans-Antarctic voyage, undertaken by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914. It straddled the First World War and is often regarded as the last of the Heroic Age of polar exploration. However, Endurance is best appreciated within the context of earlier Antarctic expeditions. In fact, Shackleton’s greatness as a leader owes much to the hardships and sacrifices of his predecessors.
Endurance is an excellent book about the explorers’ fateful journey across the Antarctic continent. Although the book is a fictional work, the true events that took place were described in detail. The expedition was ultimately abandoned when its crew was crushed by an ice pack in the Weddell Sea.
While the book begins slowly, it quickly picks up pace as Shackleton’s crew struggles to survive in the harsh environment. Endurance will inspire readers and make them appreciate the immense strength of the men who fought against the harshest climate on earth.
